it doesn’t make him a liar if he just couldn’t get who he wanted. If it’s the Wisconsin guy I’ll be so unhappy but maybe it’ll work out… I just can’t believe this is who it’s come to after all that talk. Leonard is a liar.
This whole situation reminds me of a career-related occurrence almost 40 years ago.
I worked for a company that, while not hemorrhaging money, was operating in the red. We were purchased by another company a few days before the end of June. The CEO of that company gathered the workforce the day after the sale took place. Unsurprisingly, the first question was about layoffs, and I'll never forget the CEO's response: "As things stand now, there will be no layoffs through the end of the year." Notice he said, "As things stand now."
Three months later, he gathered us again and announced that 15% of the staff would be laid off within days. When asked about his previous statement, he said, "Things changed." A discussion of unexpectedly dire financial projections followed.
In the time between Leonard's interview almost three weeks ago and now, it's clear that "things changed." Our CEO back in 1986 may have truly believed what he said about no layoffs, just as Leonard may have truly believed SIU would hire a coach who matched his checklist. It's a natural instinct to accuse people of lying, but who's to say for sure? In SIU's case, it came close to hiring a few people who checked most if not all of the boxes, but the school either couldn't meet their demands or the candidates decided they wanted to hold out for possible better offers. It happens. So we move on, and hope that whoever is hired can right this ship.
@dawg I guess you are right but if I can't complain here, where should I? I'll support this new guy, but pretend to be excited? No thanks.
@ajcsaluki Also, fair... The biggest issue I have is his big thing that he said over and over in interviews... We want to look down that sideline and Jacobson, DeVries, Wardle and think we have a coach that matches that. This hire comes nowhere close to making anyone feel that way, and if they do its complete and total blind faith.
@saluki-4-life I don't post a lot because I don't know enough to post most of the time. I just come here to learn from yall and continue to support my Salukis. I remember being super-excited when Mullins was hired. Sadly, that didn't turn out to very well. All I can do is cross my fingers and hope for a return to something resembling the glory days. I have the Double T in my profile because I have adopted the Red Raiders after sending both of my kids there for college. It is a coping mechanism I believe 🙂
So, what do we know this morning, folks? Have any planes taken off in the morning dew from Carbondale International Airport?

What candidate are you even talking about and how much research have you done into him?
Just a hunch, but my guess is none.

If I answer a phone call at work and the caller asks for any co-worker in the room who is rushing like a madman to meet a deadline, I always quickly motion for them to stand up, to which I then say, "Ummmmm, he's not sitting at his desk right now..."
😉 😉

I get it... There has been a lot of fan gatekeeping here though lately. I can't be pissed that I think we just let our best hope walk out the door. Saying so made me "Mrs. Mullins"... Which is disrespectful to the job he was doing to think he couldn't have someone who really believed in the direction we were headed. To then hire another first time head coach, as someone who didn't even think we should have an opening, is wildly disappointing and frustrating. As someone who invests copious amounts of time and emotional energy into the program, I'm entitled to those things and I am not sorry for them. You have seen my coping mechanism, it's basically just bitching... But that is how I feel.

You are wrong.
@saluki-4-life Well it breaks my heart to let Mullins go too, but it just felt to me like it was time to move on. Honestly, I think my realistic expectations are that things will stay the same or we will get worse, but I still keep following my Salukis and hoping. I still remember so fondly back in the day when any piece of Saluki apparel I might be wearing would cause other airport business travellers to start talking about our amazing basketball program. Those were truly the days. Now we are just another forgotten directional school.

I think expectations that we are going to get back to those days is causing us more harm than good too... College athletics are not the same. It might be possible but to call it improbable would be a drastic understatement.

zero people know who is being hired. The fact you’re comparing coaches before they are hired is ridiculous. Our last coach was no better than Barry Hinson so we can only go up from here.
haha, sorry, but no. It can definitely get much worse.@saluki-4-life Well it breaks my heart to let Mullins go too, but it just felt to me like it was time to move on. @saluki-4-life I can't disagree. As one of the largest states, I can't help but compare Illinois to Texas. Texas has 39 public universities. Nearly all of them are busting at the seams with students. Most of them have beautiful campuses and the big ones like Tech, A&M, and Texas have rabid alumni support. In fact, the voters of Texas just approved a permanent university fund in the amount of $4 billion dollars solely for the benefit of Tech, Houston, North Texas and Texas State. The money is ear-marked to propel those universities into the upper echelons of American research universities. Can you in your wildest dreams imagine Illinois voters approving $4 billlion for universities other than U of I? That is Texas. People here care about their state and they will vote with their dollars to enact improvements. I am ashamed of Illinois for so many reasons, but the tepid support for state universities is deplorable and a clear sign that Illinois' best years are behind it.
