@saluki44

You can SAY the exact same things about Mullens

Mullins, ultimately, was paid to get SIU to the NCAA tournament. He didn’t do that.

If I were a coach I would be rather apprehensive about this job considering what just happened to Bryan.

I guess we all think differently (which is what makes the world go round), but if I were a coach, I wouldn't worry about what the prior coach did, or did not, do.  We want a winning coach, one that is confident that they can win here.  If they are worried about stuff like that, they're probably not someone we want anyway, at least in my opinion.

smart coaches will look at this job and go wait… he did what and got fired? They expect what? No thanks. Remember even Indiana State is a bubble team and there’s a good chance they’re out. So if your only barometer is NCAAT then you aren’t paying attention. Coaches know, and I agree they’ll avoid career suicide.

There's so many other components to SIU than the basketball team.

Didn’t really believe the whole Smithpeters was a done deal thing before all this which is what the saluki for life person is saying.

But Mullins’ wife was on Facebook Friday afternoon subtly and briefly sort of bashing SIU administration, and Smithpeters to an extent.

It wasn’t much and it was only a sentence, but you usually don’t see that from a coach’s wife on social media, publicly like that, so something was going on here.

It was just a reply to someone else, but someone else had posted about Kyle Smithpeters getting the job.

So who knows at this point.

That's kind of scary if in fact there is any truth to this... that the AD is binging in KSP but... IDK... I hope the FB post is just an emotional rant with no basis in facts.  I'm sure Bryan's dismissal has hit her like a ton of bricks (my better-half would be ticked off to in a similar situation...) and I'm sorry for it too.  Tough situation to be living through.

But this has all the ingredients of a typical SIU clusterf**k. If KS is "the" man and there was no search, (which again, I doubt), I would not be surprised. And SI is going to be wild.

Yup, has all the markings of a royal flustercuck.

Whoever the new coach is, JC, D1 assistant, D2 HC, Retread D1 HC. He will have his work cut out for him. The facilities are lacking , along with NIL money. Recruiting budget is not up to par, along with a travel budget.
We always want to be the best and get to the promised land (NCAA) tournament. We will not be able to rekindle the glory days of the past. The NIL, portal transfers, power 5 schools poaching your 3rd, 4th year players.
The NET, plays a part in this also as the power teams will not or are reluctant to schedule a team like SIU, IND. ST, Drake for fear of getting beat. So the SIU’s of the world have to get into these exempt tournament's to get their NET data up.
This year IND. ST wins the Valley is 28-6 and maybe on the outside of getting in to field of 64. Because of not winning the Valley Tournament. If that was a power 5 team.  There would be no doubt about getting into the tournament. So the new coach whoever it may be needs help with the above major issues SIU lacks. NIL money, facilities, travel and recruiting budgets. Unless  the administration is going to make a concerted effort to get these things done. It will be the same results our previous coach had. No matter how hard you try to get to that promised land. You will be doomed to failure because of the lack of resources.

KS is the next coach. There is no search, it was predetermined. I’ll be back in a week or 2 to say I told you so. Joke.

Screenshotting this for potentially comedic purposes

I don’t think anyone is going to find it funny, I’ll be honest.

Not a fan of Smithpeters? (Genuinely curious.)

He would not be my first choice either.  Or my or second choice, or third, or....

KSP did well enough at JALC but then I know guys who make great service department managers at your local Porsche dealership, it doesn't make them ready to be the crew chief for Porsche at LeMans.   An even bigger delta between the Jucos and even Mid-Majors exists today versus when Alan "Sanctions" Van Winkle became our HC in 1981.

And KSP just does not to me exude them same class and general smarts that Bryan Mullins effortlessly exhibited.  Granted small data set for me to make that judgment but... sometimes you don't need a lot.  I will support him if he does in fact become our next HC and hope I'm proven wrong; that he is very successful here and we return to the big dance multiple times.

It's very strange to me that people are using Domask and Jones as evidence that Mullins was a failure.

Last year we finished where we were picked in the preseason poll - and then lost in semis to a very good Drake team that won the tourney.

This year we overachieved in the regular season and had a bad loss. We finished 4th in the MVC in margin, which is largely indicative of how good a team is. Offense was up to 6th and defense was 3rd.

There are many players that flourish when there are other good players around them. Jones and Domask could have been recruiting feathers in the cap to point to, as to what is possible by developing at SIU. That's gone now, and we didn't even give Howard a full year to work the so-called recruiting magic with Bryan.

What's done is done though sadly. SIU's budget isn't magically turning around. Any coach without ties to the area is going to jump ship immediately if they are successful here.

Mullins was improving - but also  the benches and depth were lackluster at best. There were many gaffes but they were getting better.

As an aside, some people want to play uptempo for the sake of recruiting. But that's a disaster and doesn't usually lead to recruiting success. Can point to examples if I need to. Same thing for downtempo.

Whomever they hire, I hope they have a proven track record of developing some top players and helping them along in their journey.

SIU strikes me as a place with a lot of donors who think they are big, but are actually regular sized fish in a little pond and thus are expected to be given leverage accordingly.

I think I agree that Smithpeters is a bit of an underwhelming hire. It doesn’t seem like the direction you go when you fire a coach who won 42 games the past two seasons and if Missouri State gets McCollum it looks even more underwhelming.

You would think for SIU to make the move it did by firing Mullins that they would want to make a splash hire — someone with D1 experience, or at least substantial D2 experience.

That said, I’ll support Smithpeters if he’s the man, hope that he can build a better staff than Mullins, and that he can recruit like hell.

And that he - and/or his staff - can coach a more effective offensive scheme (faster paced too...).  I want whoever our next coach is to keep a strong focus on defense but develop an equally strong approach on the offense too.  And - shouldn't have to say this - improve on the offensive boards...

If this is a done deal, I would assume it will be announced sometime very soon.

I was thinking the same thing a short while ago.  If the AD has already decided its KSP then just sign him and announce it today - give him another week or three to get a jump on the portal and everything else he'll need to do to learn how to be a D1 coach...wait... didn't the AD just say he doesn't want the next coach to learn on the job... what a friggin' mess...

Or, they could talk to some other people and take a week or two to give it the appearance of a legit search.

yeah this is what’s happening… this is our national search. Pretending to do some real work

So - Saluki 4 Life - what's your take on Jerrance Howard?  Where does he fit in all of this?  Is he gone too and applying for new gigs?

Seems like Lane didn’t get the NMSU job, they hired an interim.

Do you have a link for that? I looked online; all I could find was a recent article stating they would make an announcement within the next week.

NMSU's loss, our continued gain.

Can we just can this crap about how this team did great because they didn't finish ninth?

Did any of you really think that this was a ninth-place team going into the season? I didn't, but maybe I'm an outlier.

I honestly thought we'd better than sixth though.

(Inflammatory political snark)
