I was introduced to Kyle Smithpeters a couple of years ago. He came across as very curt and dismissive. My 2 cents worth.

Kyle's players seem to like him. A few followed him to Mizzou and former John A Logan/Drake player Jonah Jackson was backing him on Twitter:

Long time SIU basketball fan, just getting on here to finally read this. First and only post. Season ticket holder since the early 90's. Here are my thoughts, based on what I know. I am originally from Harrisburg.
Kyle Smithpeters can recruit and he has connections within coaching circles. But that's pretty much where the positives would stop.
Whereas Mullins was as genuine and authentic of a person as you can get, KS is the exact opposite. Very charismatic and personable to everyone he meets in the most insincere way possible. He is a total salesman. It's quasi-Barry Hinson. He lacks integrity and he is not intelligent. His body language when coaching is constantly negative. Always screaming at his players and throwing little tantrums on the sideline when things don't go his way.Basically, if you hated all of the attributes about Bryan Mullins, you will love Kyle Smithpeters as your head coach. If we hire him, here is what will happen. Our results on the floor will largely stay the same. Often competitive, but never great. And in the meantime, we will have traded off all of the other positive things that Bryan brought to the program, for the total opposite. It will be a mistake.SIU basketball is in a sad state of affairs as KS will not change anything within the program in a positive way.
I’ve had a few interactions with KS and can say he comes off as extremely arrogant, I have also seen him coach and anybody who has could tell you that he does not hold himself well on the sideline, he looks like a jerk constantly. I want no part of him, the main reason being if he’s hired it wasn’t a search and Bryan’s firing was pointless and an inside hit job by a small amount of powerful people.
To be fair, Wardle is a jerk and Gregg Marshall was as awful as they come. Success can come in all shapes and sizes. Certainly would prefer someone that's a great ambassador of the program though.

it was a hit job to fire a guy who won 5 games in 5 years against the top of the league?
@mr_woogers its called recruiting positives. Its a feather to recruits that they dont have to share one facility with other sports. I would figure womens basketball, baseball, softball, football (in inclement weather) plus the facility is also used for classes or they used to be.. if we want to compete with the big boys like mmost on here want to. You need a leg up on your competiton with recruting.
And the unending whine du juor will be “ 21 years with no NCAA appearance, let’s pin it on the current coach”.I have a question for everyone, in particular those who are so gung ho about dumping Mulllins: what if the new coach bombs out? There seems to be an assumption that the new guy, excuse me, person, is going to take us to The Promised Land. Casual observation of the college basketball landscape tells me otherwise. Tell me I’m wrong.
Then you move onto the next guy until you get it right.

We need to do something here, folks. Otherwise, the Bobber is going to eventually regale us with stories on end of him hitting on women old enough now to be your Grandma, back in the 70's at the American Tap and Gatsby's!!! Or maybe even Das Fas....
@dunkledog so a coach that was getting the job done in the classroom and was doing the best job he could have done under 3 AD'S and 2 chancellors in his 5 years at the helm. The budget restraints he had put on him..let me know how you would be with such turnover in the administration at SIU and the lack of budget. Try putting 10 pounds in a 5 pound bag. See how you do.

Mahony has been here since 2020. Lane as well. AD got here in 2022. We haven’t had the instability that people think. Also enrollment is well up from 2020 and so is the overall endowment (now over $550 million).
@cosmos so do you prefer a great ambassador who holds his players accountable on and off the court and gets wins (maybe not as many as some want) or a screamer who is not a great ambassador? He may win more games but at what cost? Unless we elevated our money into the program, one may get the same results.
Somebody explain to me why we need a practice facility for basketball. An arena that's empty most of the time isn't good enough? A great weight room training facility isn't good enough?
If the powers that be can get Banterra going as an entertainment venue again, that facility won't be as empty as it has been. Also it's on the list of fundraising for the Salukis Unleashed initiative, so I would say there's a good chance of it being built.

Basketball is a cornerstone of Saluki Athletics. Our men’s and women’s teams have brought about some of the most exciting moments in our university’s history. At SIU, we mark the eras by the success of our basketball programs. The construction of a practice facility for these inspiring programs is long overdue.
Our plan for a two-court practice facility expands opportunities for both teams to practice simultaneously. It offers student-athletes more opportunities to hone their craft, benefiting the most dedicated among them.
The basketball practice facility will allow all volleyball games to be played in the Banterra Center, giving them a proper home atmosphere, and positively impacting three programs at once.
This facility will provide flexibility when scheduling other community-centric events at the Banterra Center, including academic events, community programs, concerts, and more.
@fraydog Brian was hired by Kill, he left shortly therafter. Liz Jardigan took over she was fired by Lane, had an interim AD til our present AD was hired. All within a 5 year span. We have had 2 chancellors in 5 years.. thats instability. try that at a fortune 500 companies and you will chaos.
Thank goodnes we all have different opinons. thats why this sight is what it is.
