The theme of finding someone hungry who wants to move up or a assistant wanting a head job that is all fine and also wanting to low ball a coach or give them a small raise doesn't make sense to me the new coach should have a contract similar to Mullins or your pool of coaches goes down quoting my dad "Talk is cheap takes money to buy whiskey "
Hearing SIU and "national search" does not instill confidence in me. The last national search for a men's coach came up with names like Dan Mueller and Ray Giacoletti and we ended up with Barry Hinson. Now, granted, that was Mario, Rita Cheng and Roger Tedrick doing that search. Mario hired the guy at NMSU that was fired after a year for hiding player felonies.

Sounds like the resume of quite a few Power 5 coaches to me. LOL
Steve Prohm. Not an assistant, but a head coach. How is that working out for Murray State?Hearing it’s Kyle.
what a cluster this is
are you hearing he’s the guy?
Over the last 1,000 DI hires, what percent came from assistants of programs that were winless in their conference?
0.00-something?

And how much are those players getting paid to go there? The SIU magic lamp genie does not exist.I believe I saw somewhere top 5 recruiting class in the country.I’m sure I’m in the minority here but I’d love to see Kyle Smithpeters get a crack at the job. He’s recruited NBA players, and sustained success over a long time. Several of his guys have went P5 after going through his program.
And for those who talk about Mizzou having a terrible season, they also have two 5 star recruits coming in next season.

I hope that the most ardent supports of Mullins give the new coach a chance. I fully understand and appreciate that Mullins has done SO MANY good things for this University and the basketball team, but from a W/L standpoint (the number one metric coaches are judged on), he really didn't go that much better, if at all, than the previous coach (when you factor in the Valley tournament). I stand by this, if Bryan's last name was not Mullins and he had not had so much success as a player for SIU, I am confident that there would be little to no outrage on his dismissal.
If one was willing to give Mulilns 7-9 years to learn on the job, I think it's only fair that you give the next coach a minimum of 3 years to see what they can do.

Does the same go for the Anti-Mullins crowd. Already people saying if it’s Smithpeters…..blah blah blah. If you trust the AD to fire Mullins trust in him whomever he picks. If that is the guy he wants…..better support that decision. Can’t say well if he selects x,y,d I won’t support the program. Smithpeters might be the guy, so make sure you give him 3 years.
I re-posted the interview with Tim Leonard in the other thread. People really need to go listen to it.
He said he has a short list of candidates assembled already. He won’t used a national search firm — yet, at least. And, he wants a proven head coach.
It sounds to me like he has his stuff together. I’m excited to see what happens.
The truth of the matter is that people have absolutely no clue the intricacies of what happens behind closed doors. Behind the closed doors at the tip top of the mountain.
For example, many here slam the overloading of Xavier Johnson this season, and especially down the stretch of the season. Generally, yes, I myself agree with those disgruntled fans - X getting overworked to have no legs for the MVCt was an unwise avenue to go down.
But that’s just me as a fan who scours a message board and watches a couple games a week.
So it helps to remind myself that I have absolutely NO IDEA what is going on behind closed doors on a daily basis. Hell, on an hourly basis.
It’s likely that Mullins had daily individual meetings with X in his office and I imagine that it must’ve went something like this:
“Hey X, thanks for coming in. I need your for 36 minutes at Bradley. Any input on that? How you feeling? Legs holding up?”
“Coach, I need to play. Feel good. Let’s go! See you in a few hours for practice.”
The same is with Tim Leonard. Despite what underlying meaning one can decipher from a press release or a 10 minute radio interview, it’s likely that Leonard has been talking to any and all the connections he’s built up throughout his career for the last couple months. And it’s not just your connections, but your “connections” connections. Everybody who has ever been anybody throughout college basketball goes to the yearly Final Four in April and it’s just a huge meet-and-greet of suit-coated college athletics business men (yes, because college athletics is a business).
I can assure you, even if Leonard does like Smithpeters, he is absolutely going to take his time and due diligence here. No stone will be left unturned, so to say. If Leonard wants to interview someone, he’ll call and inquire.
Let it just play out. That’s the best course right now.
So is Smithpeters the guy?
I don't think (Kyle) Smithpeters will get the job. But I don't appreciate people on here needlessly bashing him already. He's a class act, a great recruiter, and did a tremendous job at JALC. If he does end up getting it, I will support him 100% and I would hope the rest of you would, too.
Same with Tim Leonard. For those of us who attend all the games- when have you ever seen such a passionate, involved AD? If you talk to him, you'll find he's a very nice guy who cares greatly about SIU Athletics. He had an extremely tough decision to make and he made it with decisiveness and class. You may not agree with it. I'm not even sure I do. But he did what he felt needed to be done in the best interest of Saluki Basketball.

If I was a betting man I’d put a good sum of money on it.
After listening to the Leonard interview I’m pretty convinced.

Incredibly well said.
