Devastating for the Evansville program, just when it looked like they were finally digging out of years of mediocrity. You have to wonder how much fight the Aces will have in them this season, and there will be a lot of roster turnover there this summer.
That is a two outs in the 9th down 3 grand slam hire for them

Did Evansville hire Brad Stevens?
Don’t think Lickliter will be near the difference-maker from a recruiting perspective that McCarty was.
Lickliter was HORRIBLE at Iowa. Hopefully he does well at Evansville.

They weren't looking to hire Bobby Petrino.
And the barkeeper's suggestion wasn't available.
National coach of the year in 2007. He only got 3 years at Iowa. Who knows if he could have turned them around
I think it’s a good hire. I know people are joking but I would have said Hinson would be a decent hire for a program like Evansville in the situation they got put in, Lickliter is perfect though especially since he’s familiar with the team.
That is about as good of a hire as they could have managed at this point in the season. I think he will make them competitive.

At this point of the season, sure. I've seen some Evansville fans question why they had to fill the role at this point rather than wait until a wide pool of candidates was available in March. They are 0-6 in the MVC so to make any decisions based on hoping to win a few more MVC games over the next six weeks seems silly.
I guess my bottom line is Evansville is a difficult job without much success over the past 10-20 years. It takes a special, outside-the-box hire to make them an upper-tier MVC program. McCarty was (not taking into account his offcourt issue). I don't think Lickliter is, and there are also questions about if he'll be in it for the long-haul or just as a stop-gap for a couple years. It'll be interesting to see how many current players and recruits he can keep, and who he's able to bring in.
Old Lickey was a great coach at Butler - from nowhere to two Sweet 16s. He was a complete mess at Iowa, taking over a mess that Steve Alford was stirring up, but he was the reason their leading scorer, Tony Freeman, transferred to SIU. Got to thank him for that.
Doubt he can pull that Butler magic at Eville, but he knows how to coach, and he'll be at home at a small school, unlike the Iowa situation.
At least the Lick will now be on the bench, not on the cheerleader!! 😀
so EU fired McArty and hired Lickliter all in the same day?
sounds fishie to me. Why did Lickey quit in August?

Lickliter had retired because of health but there were rumors about McCarty last year too. It’s possible he was getting away from the situation?
