Loyola is reloading with three wolves players. It is entirely possible they follow B Mull
I don’t think that is possible IF they have signed a NLI unless Loyola-Chicago releases them. If they don’t release them I believe they have to sit two years because they would be transferring to another MVC team.
If they don’t release them then in the future they can kiss any Wolves players or anybody the Mullins family works with good bye. That is an easy decision
You have a point, I guess time will tell . Players would have to want to go with Mullins. The next few weeks will be interesting.
Let's be honest. The next coach is going to have to pull a camel out of his ass to win 12 games next year. The cupboard is bare. You can thank the Dean for the pathetic class balance.
If the new coach can hold onto McGill, Cook and Beane and the recruits there are a lot of options. Those 3, if used properly could be a nightmare to play against. They have to be used properly. If they are coached up on defense by Bryan Mullins they could be a scary man to man team.
I think Cook would have to sit out if he transfers unless he graduates in 3 years. McGill is probably graduating as he's been in school for 4 years, so he'll be an attractive grad transfer option to a lot of schools who quite frankly will be better than us next year. I assume Beane leaves. I just don't think Mullins keeps his father around. As mentioned previously, I'm sure the Beanes have a soft spot for SIU, but will they be loyal to Mullins? If they clash, they'll most certainly split up the locker room. It'll be a toxic experience for a first time head coach with like 6 seasons under Porter Moser as the extent of his coaching experience. The freshmen will compete, but this is a man's league. They'll struggle at times.
Next year will be a rebuilding year for us. If we keep the seniors, there's harmony between Mullins and the Beanes, the freshmen play above their potential, and Hinson miracuously found gems in the walk-ons, and have no major injuries, then we might have an outside shot to win in St. Louis to make the NCAA tournament next year. That's the most realistic ceiling, but that's if everything goes right. If we're only somewhat lucky and say 2 of those 5 things come to fruition, we're in the bottom half of the conference without question. ISU has a ton of good transfers sitting out this year. Loyola will reload. MSU and Valpo will be good and more experienced.
Mullins will be a great coach for us as a long term investment, but he won't be a miracle worker next year. Be patient and let him build and recruit as he sees fit rather than try to scrape together a 17-15 season.
I think if this season has proven anything its that you don't have to be that good to be competitive in this league. You just need to be well coached, have a couple dudes who can score and find a style of play that works for you. I am not expecting Mullins to fix everything in one year, but if the guards say they have something to work with. My goal for next year would be to be competitive and fight for top 6. Thats an attainable goal.
SIU needs to revive its party school image in a big way. Southern Illinois is starving for that life-blood energy anyway. If that were to happen, it'd be much easier for Mullins to bring Wolves talent to town.
Know your appeal. Use it to your advantage.

Yep, SIU hated that image so much but trying to ditch it was one of the worst things they ever did...

Well, maybe Pitino would be a good option for that....Ladies of the Evening dotting the campus walkways, staff acting as lookouts in coach's restaurant on the Strip, a river of Addidas money flowing through the athletic department.

It is complicated...but I think I agree with you. I think.
Of equal import were the decisions along the lines of eliminating most (or all) two-year degree programs at the same time that the entire College of Technical Careers (CTC) was folded into other units.
Those making these decisions had good intentions. They thought they were doing the right thing at the time. Sound familiar?
As for SIU and its party school image--when the only time the campus made the Chicago Tribune front page was when cars were set on fire on the Strip...that's not good...but yes, the general southern IL area has its own strengths and if a young person feels like he or she can 'find themselves' at SIU...and there's just a pinch of a permissive attitude in the area about certain...uh...habits...that would be good for enrollment...but only as long as only reasonably bright students are admitted.
This stuff is complicated. Very complicated. And anybody that thinks they know all the answers on this junk...well they probably know more about ISIS than the generals (wink!).
(1) US COVID-19 statistics (February 29, 2020-June 16, 2020): 2,124,000 reported cases and 115,052 deaths
(2) Donald Trump (June 15, 2020) told a group of senior citizens that there would be very few cases of COVID-19 if the US stopped its testing and contact tracing: "If we stop testing right now, we'd have very few cases, actually."
(3) Donald Trump [(Jan 20, 2020), when asked if he's worried about a pandemic]: “No. Not at all. And we have it totally under control. It’s one person coming in from China, and we have it under control. It’s — going to be just fine.”
I have to disagree with Barkeep here. The Wolves kids are going to Loyola. Moser would go DEFCON 5 if those kids left for SIU, and the Valley would quite frankly be on Loyola's side on this. Those kids and the Mullins family had to have known there was always a chance this job would open up after this season and Bryan would take the job. They still signed the LOIs to Loyola anyways. Mullins won't go low and burn bridges like that.
Maybe Porter flys the coop before his stock starts falling.
Craving a McBride Special!
Maybe Porter flys the coop before his stock starts falling.
The Loyola fans thinking Porter could go to UCLA are unrealistic to be kind. I think Nebraska might be a landing spot for him, but from Porter and his family's perspective: do I take $2 million a year in Lincoln coaching one of the toughest jobs in the Big 10 and probably get fired after 5 years or do I stay in my cushy North Shore Chicago suburb and cash in a million dollar salary until I feel like retiring? Porter will need an entire recruiting class to never win a Valley game in their careers before Loyola seriously considers firing him. That kind of circular logic regarding their UCLA speculation then starts to makes sense because they're probably Loyola's only competition for his services even if UCLA doesn't want him.

I never said they would ask out. I just said if they did Loyola would let them out .
This is the NCAA page
“If you have signed your NLI with the school, you’re locked in to playing there for at least one year”
“National Letter of Intent release rules. If your student-athlete changes their mind about the school they signed an NLI with, they must ask to be released from the program. If they are not granted a release form, the player will lose oneyear of eligibility.”

Barekeep, I value your info and sources, but WHAT IF......
The intended target says no. Maybe he would view such a transition as too messy. Kids might leave Loyola to follow him, and I don't believe he would want that. HUCKY is likely to do some of the same scorched earth leaving here as he did MO State, so the TARGET starts his new gig with some negative publicity generated by HUCKY and his media friends. You know HUCKY is going to hang his hat on this latest run and if they get 4th, he will be pushing that with his media pals.
So, if the intended target says no, is there a backup plan that does NOT include HUCKY here next season?
Simply put, I want him gone no matter what.
Hucky will not be here next year period.
I know this is hard to believe but He is not going to cause any problems. He has other plans.
I do not see Bryan saying no in any world. I don’t know if any of the kids will try to follow him.
Bryan Mullins will be the head coach next year .
