Comparing the Nick Hill siuation to the Bryan Mullins situation is not fair to either one of those young men. Please don't do it.
Just got home after a weekend in the Lou. Observations & Thoughts
-The pre-game Hilton gathering was encouraging. Coach Kill gave a passionate speech and now I know how he got the most out of his players. He acknowledged current realities and how they did not live up to his expectations. He laid out a plan and goals for the next few years focusing on gaining back fans and fundraising.
-I witnessed the booing of Coach Hinson after the game. It was not appropriate and not a good look for Saluki fans amongst Valley peers. However, I have an alternate take on the booing. I'm glad we have a fanbase that is still passionate and expects results. I live near multiple Valley schools and see what mediocrity breeds in a fanbase. So even though I didn't agree with it, I'm encouraged were going to rally around the next person.
-I hope we complete a national coaching search. Although I am a big fan of Bryan and would be very happy with his selection, I want to see us kick the tires around the country. I'm drawing on comparisons with Nick Hill and hiring the young, alumni coach. I believe the jury is still out and want to ensure were not rushing the process. It would also be interesting to have your flagship programs having head coaches with a combined age under 70.
-Good luck to Barry in the future. I feel for his situation and inability to make the tournament. I do believe he did more to keep us out of NCAA issues in the begging, than we'll likely know.
-With that being said the time is now to step up as fans. There have been multiple posts about not renewing season tickets or not donating until Barry is gone. Well that has happened, don't wait to see if you like the new coach, do it now. Support the direction, support change and follow-up on those statements. It would be a shot in the arm to Lingle Hall if the phones are ringing Monday with fans supporting the new direction of Saluki Athletics. Go Dawgs!
I get what your saying but if Mullins is the target and absolutely should be. Why waste the money on a search ?
The way I think of it is best described by the old adage of "You don't know, what you don't know." How do we know Mullins absolutely should be the pick? I'm not saying I'm against that choice, I would just want more information on the current market. What if there is a high caliber assistant at a P5 that wants to make the move? The way it's being presenting, there is no choice and I want Coach Kill to have the ability to obtain additional information, interest, options, etc.
Is Heff getting dumber ?
Not his job or place to contact these kids

And I can’t argue with that
now find one with sweet 16 playing experience. Final four coaching experience and a father who is the coach of one of the top AAU programs in the country.
I will be waiting
Is Heff getting dumber ?
Not his job or place to contact these kids
I don't normally take Heff's side on any subject but it sure is his place to ask those kids if things have changed because of Hinson leaving. Beat writers do it all the time when the coach leaves.

I am not trying to be a smartass here but why? Young alumni coaches from the '00 glory days with very little to no head coaching experience seem similar.

New coaches job not his.

That’s how I see it as well and the basis for my comment.

You don't think Jerry Kill or someone from within the athletic department haven't already been talking to these kids (and their parents) before Heff picked up the phone. If they hadn't, someone has dropped the ball.

That would mean I have to compare them. 😉
It's too early to put a label on Nick Hill's hire, and, beyond them being young, their particular backgrounds are vastly different.
Sorry, but that's as far as I will go.

I like Hill a lot and really really hope he succeeds. He was a high school coach who came cheap in hopes it works out.
Bryan is a D-1 associate head coach with final four experience. Honestly if he was not an alumni he would probably not even return SIU’s call he is a rising star with the ultimate recruiting connection. Not even comparable
YES!!!
WOOF!
Moser signed a 7 year extension with a huge buyout clause if he leaves. He is not going anywhere
They will regret it. Ask any ISU fan.
Eh in this new and depleted MVC I think Moser will likely do just fine. Not final four good again, but fine
Hill was an NFL player and an assistant coach at SIU. At least give him all his credentials.

Just because he's a young guy and an alum, that doesn't disqualify him now does it?
Many top flight assistants in P5 conferences are going to make near or more than what Hinson was making. SIU has some negatives. A declining enrollment, a basketball budget not in the top of the MVC, financial struggles and an administration above the AD with a LOT of question marks. Then there is the spectre of moving to Illinois, a broken state with some of the highest tax rates in the land. I don't know that landing a top flight P5 assistant is in the works UNLESS one of them were to express interest in the job first.
As I recall back in the 80's when this program was in the dumper it reached out to an inexpensive high school coach and he brought SIU basketball back to life. When he couldn't sustain his own success, SIU reached out to a Big 10 assistant who wasn't exactly a household name and I doubt schools were beating down his door, since he'd been an assistant for 18 years.
Both those hires worked out pretty well. I don't think someone should be disqualified because they don't come as an assistant from Duke or Kansas. This is all about finding the right fit at this time.
