Lickliter flamed out in freaking NAIA, he's done, no thank you.
And I never said you couldnt get assistants as candidates, in fact I said one of the two kinds of coaches we could get are young assistants hungry for a shot.
Also I feel NBA experience is useless, gives you no experience in one of the two biggest aspects of college coaching: recruiting. It is also why I wouldnt even remotely consider a high school coach.
Having an NBA 1st round pick as HC and knowing all those players and coaches in the NBA doesn't give you a lot of connections? We'll see how McCarty does, but I think he'll do well. You also learn a ton from watching the greatest players in the game every night ... and you have to learn how to get along with diverse players, something Lowery and Hinson seem to have issues with.
I agree it's a rare HS coach I would consider, but I thought Rich Herrin was a darn good coach. Also brought in some NBA-level talent.
You can learn how to get along with players in the college game too. We will see how he does at Evansville but I know I wouldn’t want a coach who is 5+ Years removed from recruiting.
yea herein was good, that was also 30 years ago you just don’t really see guys jumping from high school to div I. Plus once again I want guys to have recruiting experience
anyways I don’t disagree with you that we should do an actual search, I just feel the choices are young assistant who is hungry for a shot or flame outs like Hinson who already had a shot and failed. I don’t feel SIU is in a position to plunder any successful head coaches. Maybe a junior college or lower division one, but I think I’d rather have a div I assistant than a Div II Head coach
Matta is a great thought but I doubt he would be interested. Does anyone remember why he transferred out of here?
Greg and Thad weren't good D1 basketball players. They were warm bodies to fill out a roster.
Two words: Nick Hill - sharp young Saluki, highly respected OC, more experienced than Mullins and still looking for success.
I'm sure Mullins is a sharp young guy and not a bullsh*t machine like Hinson. He might turn out to be a great young coach. That lack of any head coaching experience is bothersome. And I wouldn't say Loyola's recruiting has been head and shoulders above ours. Before last year's surprising season by Loyola (please note Loyola's anemic performance this year), most people were constantly saying Loyola was a weak choice for the MVC.
As far as this not being a hot job, it's a mid-major. There's a ton of coaches out there who'd love to become a head coach here for $350K/year - there are certainly lower-paid mid-major jobs out there. Don't think there would be a lack of candidates. Most see this or other mid-major jobs as a stepping stone (except Hinson of course.)
If I was AD, I'd really do my homework before hiring the next coach. I wouldn't automatically hand it to Mr. Mullins without checking out the lay of the land.
Agree!

Dear Santa,
Merry Christmas!
May I please have new SIU basketball head coach? That's the only thing I want this year. Please hurry! Before Christmas is preferred, but hopefully before 2019. Slydog's grandma, a three legged dog, it just doesn't matter. You will make so many people happy, you won't believe it. Thank you in advance.
Also, I did say please and thank you.

This! C'mon Santa don't let me down.
Oh yeah.....and if it's not too much trouble, I'd like to get folks in SIU's core administration that have some vision and are smart enough to get this university on the right track.....

I have asked Santa for the same gift now for 7 years, I hope he answers your request.
I wonder if Alford would consider Carbondale as a place to re-ignite his coaching career. I know that things didn't go well at UCLA this year, but he has a proven track record of success. If he doesn't get any calls from the big boys, would he consider a return to his MVC roots?

No possible way, IMO !
I agree, hope that wouldn't even be considered. Far too many other options that to go the retread route.
Question; This has been kind of in the back of my feeble mind- Doug Novsek was hired, it appeared, just before the start of the season as the Quality Control Consultant. Who did this hire? Hinson or Kill? And since someone said in another topic that he (Novsek) wasn't totally sure what his duties would be has that ever been defined? I know he is on the bench. His coaching resume is fairly impressive and of course his playing time at SIU was evidently as well (I was not following as closely during that time as I have since). If the hire was made by Kill then it begs the question if he was hired for possible future adjustments to that title? Just wondering if anyone else that is much more in the know than I am has any feedback on that?
Hinson hired Novesk.
My vote is for a national coaching search and may the panel that does the hiring have the wisdom to select the best coach for SIU.
