I’ll give a take that’s a bit different in speculation of starters.
It seems to be a consensus that Lance and Marcus are starters again. I put Lance continuing at PG and Marcus as the three spot. I’m putting Coupet Jr at the two. Isn’t he advertised as a guard that can play multiple positions? My unconventional pick is D’Avanzo at the stretch 4. I think the experience he got last year will land him there. I don’t like Domask at the four spot which is why I make this speculation. I still give center to Kyler. Until we can see what a healthy Muila can do, I just stick with him. And we just don’t know what Ebube can do yet or any of the other freshman.
1 – Jones
2 – Coupet Jr
3 – Domask
4 – D’Avanzo
5 – Filewich
I think Banks is lock to backup Jones and one of the first off the bench. Who will be next? Verplancken? Harvey? Brown? Mulia?
From there, who knows. I think this will be the most talented team we’ve seen in a decade but where will the minutes go? Will some of the freshman shine and jump ahead in the rotation? Do we have players that have been recruited over and will lose minutes? Of course injuries dictate a lot of decisions and I can scarcely remember a season without injuries that bench players.
Hopefully good times ahead.
That would definitely be one way to have a bigger lineup that could be an interesting look. One drawback: a little slow-footed in the frontcourt with D’Avanzo and Filewich both out there.
True on the feet, but those two did display a nice inside-out game at times last year; plus, I think if Anthony isn't the focal point big that defenses hone in on that works out best for for him and for Kyler.
I think slots 2 and 4 are the variables for my starting five: Domask, Jones, and Filewich I think are locked in the starting line up, but what 2 and 4 and up being is pretty intriguing - we have tons of really good options.
D'Avanzo shouldn't be taking minutes from anyone tbh.
He was just simply not very good and overmatched at this level essentially every time he played last year.
I get why you take a flier on a 5th year senior who played well, even a D2 one. But he showed he shouldn't be anything more than depth and a practice body.

He scored 16 and 18 points in 2 of his 3 games against Loyola. The team that shut down Kofi Cockburn a few weeks later in Indy. He seemed to get better down the stretch once he adjusted to the talent level of the Missouri Valley. I'm not expecting a big step forward but I think he's going to contribute more than you think.

If Muila is 100% healthy, flip him for Filewich and I could see that lineup working very nicely on both ends. Possibly Ebube too. I think Filewich is better suited for smaller lineups featuring Domask at the 4. That could work well with any number of combos at the 2 and 3.

I still believe Domask will spend the majority of his time at the 4.
Filewich, at least at this point has better hands and feet then Ebube and Muila. Though his hops aren't as good his skill level for a freshman was outstanding. Go back and look at Randall Falkers Fr and So stats and if you can remember, he didn't really come into his own until his Jr. year. Kyler is ahead of where most recent SIU big men have been as Freshman. I see him starting most games and with expected improvement he will be tough to move out. However in all actuality doesn't really matters who starts , it will be about who gets the most minutes. Time will tell but my bets on Kyler at this point. Also believe we will see a lot of hi-low action between D'Avonzo and Filewich. They were pretty effective at times with that last year.

Spike did not hit the nail on the head. Davanzo had some good games late in the year. He led the team in blocks (only 15) and was 2nd leading rebounder of guys who played the full season, while only averaging 20.4 mins per game, 8th on the team. He'll get some playing time, and I expect him to be better prepared this year.

How's Muila's offense? I think it's a mistake not to give Filewich a lot of minutes. Very good passer, decent rebounder, nice touch around the basket - tremendous upside it appears.

Based on what I recall seeing and reading when he signed, I’d expect most of Muila’s points to come on putbacks and dunks (usual *if healthy disclaimer).
Generally I’d expect Filewich to be the more effective of the two offensively and Muila to be the better defensive piece.
With a full roster of the able-bodied, I expect us to get back to full blown Floorburn U. Those who buy into that will be rewarded with more minutes. I expect to see considerable minutes from Trent Brown for that reason.

My post wasn't intended to be a knock on Filewich's offense. My opinion; Filewich, D'Avanzo, and Domask is a front court that could struggle defensively. I also think Filewich is a better fit with a smaller lineup due to his more polished offensive ability. Surround him with shooters, or even a slasher like Coupet who can dive to the cup without the ball in his hands, and suddenly its a lot more difficult to clog the paint with double teams. I think optimal perimeter options around Filewich will be consistently more effective than a high-low game with D'Avanzo.
Edit: It may not be this year, but I'm actually hoping Ebube can supply some of the best of what both Filewich and Muila offer. Total game changer if he can do that at his size. I think he has that kind of potential.

I think it is unfair to put any expectations on guys like Muila and the freshman.
Muila is a JUCO who also missed a year. The freshman missed much of their senior seasons with lockdowns.
I thought the same thing in that D'Avanzo and Filewich would probably not be the strongest option for Defense. I still think, IF HEALTHY, JD will get more minutes, per game, by the end of the season due to his athleticism. He is the mold of Dearman and Falker, IMO.
Congrats to the players and the program. I’m proud of these guys. https://siusalukis.com/news/2021/7/27/mens-basketball-nabc-recognizes-saluki-basketball-academics.aspx
