Heartbreaking loss where we had a chance to get a big win. We missed many open shots, probably the second best free throw shooter on the team misses one towards the end, and we were not the beneficiary of the officiating. The last shot X made on his pull-up in the lane was shot after getting fouled both on the drive and then on the shot, both times by Brodie. I thought he got away with way too much tonight.
I am really tired of post players ramming into defenders over and over, then getting the call when they are barely touched on the shot. The call on Hensley when DeVries shot the fadeaway, including the leg kick out, was ridiculous.
Bryan Mullins with the media:
Ebube should have played until he had 5 fouls tonight. This is frustrating. I think the talent is there, not sure our point guard coach knows how to use big men.
I don't think Mullins coached a bad game. We just don't have good inbounds plays. We definitely need better inbound plays, that's on the coaches, but I thought the in game coaching overall was good tonight. Better motion on offense tonight. If we shoot our normal percentage from 3 we win going away. No moral victories, but we are playing better and at a much higher level. I now think the only team we would have a very hard time beating at Arch madness is Indiana State. We can play with and beat anyone else.Enough of the end of game coach bashing I am sure these plays are practiced over and over during practice for these situations sometimes things happen good defense a player mishandling a dribble someone not getting open but the coaching isn't one of them I understand emotions are high after a loss but this team is on an upward trend no moral victories but have to love how this team competes
On top of that, Drake got some easy buckets off inbound plays earlier in the game. Costly in a tight game.
I'm dealing with a couple of Mullins apologists over on the Facebook threads tonight, and it's like they don't know who they're dealing with. Taking shots at me like I'm someone who doesn't know anything about Saluki basketball. Kids today... 😉
refs definitely cost the team the game and it wasn’t badly coached. Let me know how the Facebook thing works out for you. Plenty of other games show his lack of coaching but tonight was not one and they made decent defensive adjustments. Sorry for the bold letters but can’t figure out how to turn them off. If you seriously think the coaching rather than officiating was a problem this game we must have been watching different games.I'm dealing with a couple of Mullins apologists over on the Facebook threads tonight, and it's like they don't know who they're dealing with. It was a well coached. Well played… horribly officiated game. Nothing to be upset about on SIUs end. Guys end of game situations are hard. That’s a good look at the end of regulation and X got his cross over poked at the end of OT. It happens. When you play good games someone has to win and someone has to lose. That game gives me far more hope than it does discourage me. Boys brought it tonight and came up just short on the scoreboard. So what? Who in a million years coming into the year thought this team had the firepower to compete with the best MVC teams? You’re lying if you say you did. Hell of a game, let’s take it out on Illinois State Saturday.
This team certainly is full of surprises. If you had to chart its performances, the ups and downs would resemble the movements of a volatile high-tech stock. I was figuring on a 15-point loss going into this one and if you had told me that SIU would have opportunities to win on two final possessions on the road against a very good team, I would have taken it. If there'd been better officiating and more competent execution at the end of regulation and OT, we're probably celebrating a stunning upset this morning. I hope it's something to build on.
No problems with the way SIU was coached overall or how they played last night. I do think we showed a little too obvious what we were doing with Brodie; diving to protect the rim every time he touched the ball. The back cuts did need to be limited and he's a good passer for a big, but that cost us some easy, uncontested drives to the hoop by him in some key moments. Maybe if Rupert and Ebube played up a little more with active hands and baited some passes, maybe we turn some of those into deflections and turnovers.
We also could've made life a little harder for DeVries, at least running more doubles at him to try and get the ball out of his hands. Didn't really like Trent or X guarding him. Ferguson and Davis probably should've had that assignment all game, although I realize AJ was limited by hair trigger whistle syndrome.
My only issue with Mullins' coaching last night was the obvious inbounds gaffe at the end of overtime. That play didn't have a chance. Didn't matter what the refs count was. Have to at least get the ball inbounds there. Not the inbounders fault either. That's a chronic issue that needs fixed.
Also, not having another PG on this roster that Mullins can trust really hurts. With X being our guy, we don't have the ability to run anything off the ball for him in crunch time.

I left that game thinking... Saturday cannot get here fast enough. That's it. I am pumped about the end of the season run.

Still a lot of challenging games left on the slate ... in fact, the home game with Illinois State Saturday is by far the easiest, and even that is no gimme, especially coming off an OT loss where X played 45 minutes.
Point being ... for better or worse, seems like there will be several more late-game situations where offensive execution is needed to pull out close games. The fact of the matter is they need to improve in that area to end the season on a good note.
Don't worry guys we were projected to lose by 9 and only lost by 4. That's considered successful for a few people here

Don't be a D Bag. No one is happy we lost. We are just talking about the game.Don't worry guys we were projected to lose by 9 and only lost by 4. That's considered successful for a few people here
It's not that serious lol just giving a few a hard time. We played fine, still frustrating that we have these same end of game struggles in year 5 but it is what it is
