"SIU also has to find another legit scorer." I think D'Amico could be used more. He only averaged 2 shots/game and his made percentage wasn't great,  but I did see flashes occasionally.

While D'Amico did a lot of things very well for a true freshman, I don't see him as much of a scorer. He could improve but from what I saw this year, he is not a very good 3 point shooter and he also struggles getting his shot off when driving to the basket. I hope he proves me wrong because he is really good in other ways. As others have said I think they need a point guard and a long guard who can score.

Yeah that's not really his game, wasn't in high school either. I still believe he's going to be a very good player for us, he does a little bit of everything. Just not someone who I see being able to take over games offensively

Wouldn’t be a bad idea to give D’Amico some off-season homework to watch A LOT of clips of Garrett Sturtz. That might be his role, and that’s a compliment.

I'd take Garrett Sturtz on our team in a heartbeat I'll tell you that!

I think it’s a bit unfair to say D’Amico can’t be a scorer going forward. He was a facilitator and scorer in high school struggled a bit more his senior year in the scoring department. He shot 38% from 3 which is pretty good (albeit only shot 21 3’s all year). He was pretty good at getting to the basket on drives and made some nice passes as a result and occasionally could finish although he didn’t look to finish as often as he should have.

I think he’ll take a big step up next year now that he’s had some games under his belt. I don’t think you can rely on him to make up for all that you lose from Coupet though, not next year at least. He can certainly help bridge the gap though.

I'd bet on Foster Wonders providing more scoring next year than D'Amico.

If the plan is to just replace Coupet with a point guard that can run the offense, I'd be concerned going into next year.  You'd have to have a lot of improvement from within in terms of scoring to make up for losing your 3rd leading scorer on a team that didn't score that well last year to begin with.

The scoring that we need for next year is not on the current roster. Much work needed this Spring to bring in the needed talent.

the scoring will not be there in a defensive oriented program. we expend too much effort in defense in practice and in games for prolific scoring.

I don't think anyone is expecting 80+ points a game but it has to be better than it's been.  They've improved from 252nd in adjusted offense to 219th in 2021 to 183rd in 2022 but it still needs to be even better than that.

So how does Southern get better in your world? Hold every opponent under 60 points?

SIU is 3-27 under Mullins when scoring less than 60 points and 52-44 when they score more than 60 points including 32-2 when they score over 70.

SIU hasn't really won the ugly games under Mullins.  They win the games when they're able to score with some kind of consistency.

Scoring with consistency is key to winning with every team but on nights you don't defense will keep you in games hopefully the balance will be there in the future

I'd like to SIU institute a motion offense.  Last season the offense consisted of one guy driving to the basket and 4 other guys watching/waiting for a kick-out pass to shoot a 3.  Bottom line the offense wasn't effective and the coaches really need to come up with a better plan on the offensive end.  Making a concerted effort to rebound on offense is also going to be a key.  Rebounding is all about effort and SIU didn't put much effort forth in that area on the offensive end.  May also be a detriment of attempt to work with one big and 4 guards.

The offense with drive and kick is the evolution of the game with analytics saying 33 percent of 3s made is more effective than 50 percent of 2s rebounding is effort but the strategy of setting up defensively seems to be the norm these days as only select teams seem to be able to offensive rebound if I am not mistaken there was a game in the valley where neither team had an offensive rebounds we don't have to like it but it seems to be a strategy
