I don't often disagree with SalukiWorld, and while I did like SVP a lot, I think we are getting a better player in Newton. At the very least we are getting a much more consistent scorer. SVP would disappear in games and that really hurt last year's already offensively challenged team. I think we're getting a player that will average around double digits but one who can carry the scoring load on nights where he's hot or the others might be having an off night.
Regardless, while I think this is a good pick up, I do not believe he is the key to getting to the next level. That needs to come in the shape of an athletic wing or forward who can play d, score and rebound. That's not asking too much, is it? lol
I'm guessing Newton is a bench piece so I don't mind the addition. I think it'll end up being an even swap because he's a better scorer than Verplancken and this team needs scoring desperately.
I do think Verplancken was a good scorer that didn't shoot enough. I don't know if some of that had to do with the offense SIU runs or with him. He was a huge piece in the Colorado win last year. Wouldn't be surprised if he had some success elsewhere.

Agree 100% that SVP didn't shoot enough; if he became more aggressive he could have been a great player IMO.
As for Newton, pretty impressive game log with some interesting highlights:
- Scored 30 against Rice, and added 7 rebounds (3OT game though)
- 21 and 9 rebounds against Drake
- 19 and 10 rebounds against Akron, an NCAA tourney team last year
- Had 2 long stretches of games scoring in double figures (8 games in a row, and then 7 in a row towards the end of the year)

The guys who do the Dawgs Basketball podcast are high on this guy. Played well for South Alabama as a freshman. Don't think he'd be the immediate impact we're hoping for, but a solid guy with 3 years of eligibility left.

shoots 52% from the ft line, after watching Mulia all year, thats enough for me to lose interest. I can't handle watching guys like that shoot ft's anymore. lol
The good thing about Newton is after playing under Lickliter’s Aces he’ll think Mullins’ offense is the Showtime Lakers.

Muila was honestly the worst FT shooter I have seen in my 35 years of watching college hoops, but our top guard shot 56% from the FT line which, from the guard spot, is also in serious need of improvement.
I like the Newton signing. He and Givance were far and away Evansville's best players the last 2 years. He is more athletic than Verplancken. He was averaging 13.8 points and an impressive 5.8 rebounds before he hurt his knee. He came back for their mvc tourney game, but aggravated the knee injury. If he is 100% recovered, it is an excellent signing. He is a proven scorer. He can score from the outside or drive to the hoop. He is very good at scoring through contact. He is a guy who can go get his shot, which we need.
He can score from the outside, but 3-point shooting has not been a strength over his career.
Yes, very true, he is just an average 3 point shooter. Verplancken was a much better 3 point shooter. However, Newton is more athletic and much more of a scorer and rebounder than Verplancken. Newton has a pull up jumper, turn around jumper, can drive, and is very athletic around the rim. Also, Newton is a very good free throw shooter and gets to the line exponentially more than Verplancken did. This is not to say I didn't like Verplancken, I did. It's just that Newton is way more of a scorer and rebounder, both of which SIU really needs in a guard.
SVP was a stellar 3-point shooter - one of the best in the league - but Newton has a stellar mid-range pull-up game from the games I watched. I think he'll be a great fit; now on to see who fills the last scholarship!
In conferences games, Verp was the 5th best 3pt shooter on our team (35.8%) and averaged 5 pts a game and 1.7rbs. Newton averaged 12 ppg in conference and 5.1rbs (77% FTs). Big upgrade.

Jones was bad to start his career at FT shooting and then steadily got better in his Freshman season and it carried over into his Sophomore season. Not sure what happened last year, too much overthinking at the line.

5 ppg is a good scorer? I think not. Why would it be an EVEN swap if Newton's a lot better scorer and lot better rebounder?
Verp shot a lot and missed - had some nice games in the nonconference. 5th best 3pt shooter on our team if you remove the nonconference games. Streaky shooter. Unfortunately the good streaks were few and far between.
Couldn't get open or couldn't hit when he did get open. Also couldn't drive it and get to the foul line - shot exactly 4 FTs in conference. Couple of good games a year. Newton's a big upgrade. Can rebound and drive it - good FT shooter and good rebounder.
Newton scored a lot on a 6-24 Evansville team, I'd expect that scoring to decrease significantly if he's coming off the bench and playing behind Domask, Jones & hopefully another scorer we add (Verplancken was also behind Coupet in the pecking order). Newton was forced to be the 2nd option on Evansville behind Givance.
The difference between Newton and Verplancken is Newton won't be shy when taking shots, so I think he can be an upgrade offensively for us, because we need as much scoring as possible.
At this point I expect Newton starts since Mullins tends to prefer a 4 guard lineup:
PG - Johnson
SG - Jones
Wing - Newton
Wing - Domask
Big - Muila? Ebube?

If the season started today, I think this lineup could be the starting one, but there is at least one more key piece to the puzzle coming in and I at least hope that that piece is of starting material in the form of an athletic wing/fwd with length who can score, defend and rebound. Regardless, there is still at least one player to add to the team.
Newton is a solid get and should be good off the bench...not the big impact guy I was hoping for, but we still have one more scholarship (at least). TJ McFlys seems to indicate we will have a big time transfer soon (no idea how connected he is with the program), so I'm hopeful there is stretch 4 on the way with some scoring punch!

Yea I’m trying to decide if he’s actually connected and knows something or just the most positive person I’ve ever seen. Lol
