Guess we have to hope he's a late-bloomer/diamond in the rough ... certainly not a high-profile kid, and very much seems like the kind of recruit you take after missing on several more established targets.
Hard to imagine a kid who averaged 11 ppg at the D2 level coming in and playing a major role for an MVC contender next year unless he's really a high-level defender, but maybe he eventually develops into a nice piece.
Looks like the path to taking a big step next year, if that's going to happen, is going to have to come from the underclassmen (D'Amico, Wonders, Ebube, maybe Hornecker) showing they're ready to make a big impact.
You are exactly correct. This will be Mullin's third D2 transfer since he has been here.
The other two
Steven Verplancken
Avg 16.4 ppg 5.0 rebounds shot 49 % 40% from 3 as a freshmen at Glenville State College
Anthony D'Avanzo
Avg 15.8 ppg 8.4 rebounds a game shot 49% and 40% from 3 as a Senior at Lewis College that plays in one of the best D2 leagues in the country.
Both of these players had better stats coming in to SIU and neither one had an impact in the Valley.
recruiting D2 transfers doesn't seem to be a path to the top of the Valley.
Very disappointing, hope I am wrong and this kid turns out to be great.
Some great clips on twitter. He can score from anywhere on the floor and plays defense.

I like the addition! Mr. Ferguson can hoop!
Is it just me, or does it sound like a Mike Reis copycat making the call on the play at the :20 mark of this video?

I don’t mind the addition but highly doubt this impacts next year’s team. I’m guessing there’s another move coming, probably a big. But if this is the roster going into this season, my expectations are pretty meh for next year. They’ll naturally be better because the Valley is going to be weaker and I think they’ll improve internally but I can’t imagine picking SIU over Drake, Missouri State, and possibly Murray State if they grab Brian Moore.
Guessing the roster looks like this, barring another addition:
PG: Johnson, Newton, Banks
SG: Jones, Brown, Wonders, Banks
SF: Domask, D’Amico, Ferguson Jr, Harvey(?)
PF: Muila/Ebube, D’Amico
C: Muila/Ebube/Hornecker

A lot depends on if Ben Harvey is healthy enough to be back on the court next season.

I think you need to look bigger. This team really doesn’t have room for guards. They only have Ebube, Muila, and Hornecker in the front court and 2 haven’t played a D1 game. Also think D’Amico can play the 4 and might even be in contention to start and while I expect D’Amico to take a bigger step offensively, I’d really be concerned about the offense again.
@dr222 That did sound like Mike Reis. With only this film to go by, Mr. Ferguson looks like a younger version of Ben Coupet. Similar athleticism.

Someone better get a memo to Murray State coaching staff. They have signed two D2s, and according to some on this board, Murray is the greatest thing since sliced bread.

Murray had their entire roster in the portal because they were a victim of their own success. They’ve been able to salvage a few players and most of their highly-regarded 2023 recruiting class including 3 star Braxton Stacker. They added two bigger transfers in JaCobi Wood and Rob Perry and I think they’ll be adding Brian Moore tonight. The two D2 guys you mentioned averaged about 17 PPG, and 6 RPG each.
But again, comes down to do you value talent or do you value retention and building a program of 4-5 year guys. It’ll be interesting to see the parallels between a Missouri State/Murray State and a Drake and SIU that has retained players.
When discussing the value of D2 players in the MVC, I always refer to Tate Hall's 1st year (his Sophomore year) at Loyola!

Well.. this kid certainly has all the tools. Here's hoping he's a late bloomer because with his height, athleticism, ability to knock down 3's, handle the ball and defend, he definitely has the potential to develop into a very nice player in this league.
When SIU was great, we made a living on finding and developing players with this type of profile.
Like others on here, I still suspect there will be one more addition for next year; likely a 4 or 5 with experience (and hopefully high-end athleticism).

I can understand your opinion here, but something convinced Kyler Filewich that he would be looking at reduced playing time with those three bigs available next season. Kyler, while defensively challenged, did provide an offense skill set for a big on this team.
With Bryans penchant for playing 4 guards, I believe if another player is added it will be a 6'6" to 6'8" wing.

And not the 10-plus DII transfers in the league since then that were average or below average MVC players? 😆
I'm not saying DII guys can't perform well in the MVC, but I do think it's more of a longshot, generally speaking.
