Just get the Spradlin thing done, so we can focus on rebuilding and stop with these idiotic rumors.
I think it’s far more likely to be Smithpeters than Spradlin at this point.
It'd be nice if they circled to someone like Jerrod Calhoun at Youngstown State who apparently wanted to leave
If Spradlin is a no and one of the two candidates now rising to the forefront is the choice, I'd have to ask who else (if anyone) we reached out to. Calhoun? Henderson at South Dakota State? Huss at High Point? Crazy-successful Division II coaches aside from McCollum? A lot of pretty solid options were out there.

one thing that I feel like has been understated for the Smithpeters rumors (which I also had heard as soon as Bryan was fired) is that Mullins and Kyle are pretty tight.
I heard that Kyle wasn’t very happy with the firing, either. So if he was a candidate, there’s a chance he might not have jumped on the opportunity. Coupled with the fact that he has an awesome recruiting class coming in at Mizzou and his family is very happy there.
But who knows.
Bryan and Kyle are definitely not tight. Especially after these past two weeks.

The Logan to SIU recruiting “pipeline” certainly never unfroze under either Smithpeters, so they couldn’t have been that tight.

😯
then I need to admit I was wrong there about things I heard between them.
The longer this goes, the more I fear it is Johnson. Would much rather have Smithpeters than him, no question. Especially considering what I hear could be the motivation for hiring Johnson. But I’ll keep my mouth shut until that happens. Still hopeful for Spradlin but I’m a bit nervous about it.
The only “fear” I have with Johnson is it’s clearly Lane getting his guy again. But there’s nothing wrong with that hire at all. It’s an associate head coach of an SEC team that just won an NCAA Tournament game last night
”His guy” includes check boxes that doesn’t have to do with accomplishments. Same as our women’s coach, and that’s went well…
I don’t get how Mullins gets 6+ years to build his program but people are trying to pretend the women’s hire was a bad one after two seasons. They’re not the same level of job too.
I understand why some were ready to move on from Mullins. He had flaws. He hadn't gotten us over the hump. But to compare his program to the current state of the women's would be ridiculous.
Bryan's program had some major positives, which were the primary reasons that many supported his retention. I have not seen any of those from the current women's head coach. I don't follow that program closely, but most things I've picked up on indicate disaster.
Here’s my analogy….
We got divorced from Mullins because he wasn’t good in the sack. We are getting ready to marry our mistress(devin Johnson) but will claim to have went out daring and played the field and they are the one for us.
At least with smithpeters you can claim you looked around….you can’t really say that if you hire Johnson. It wouldn’t be a good look. But who knows we might get the right guy for the program.
When was the last pipeline fromLogan to SIU? Under Weber, Hinson, or Mullins. I am curious how players from Logan ended up with SIU?

Then why have your AD put on a dog and pony show ? It doesn’t look good for him. Certainly not the donors, and season ticket holders. Just a bad look all around!

I don’t think you can claim you did much of a search if you hire Smithpeters. Again, no other MVC-level program would dream about hiring an assistant with light experience coming from a winless in conference program.

Totally agree with you it won’t be a good look if the hire goes this way.

It’s been never more than a trickle as far back as I can remember (3-4 decades). But if you were ever going to make any inroads, as in get 1-2 helpful players over a decade, you’d think it would have been with SIU basketball alums leading the program and a lot of D1 prospects like they’ve had in the past 10-12 years.
So if it’s not Spradlin, did he pass or did we? I imagine maybe he just wanted more than we could offer. It sounds like Ben M. isn’t going to be the guy at MSU according to their board anyway. Some were saying he wanted too much, if that’s the case he isn’t coming here.
I think maybe our leadership over estimated the draw of SIU given our resources and NIL? Established coaches, especially those looking to move up, want a good situation in that area, especially if a complete rebuild is on the horizon. It may very well require us to hire someone looking to be a head coach as more incentive.
i posted before. a HC looks at several thigs you mention plus what i said about it, is SIU still the job that it used to be.
( NIL, FACILITIES , administrative support, money for asst. coaches, travel recruiting). its a different world out there now. are we falling behind?
Not are we falling behind…we’ve already fallen behind. It’s a game of catchup now and I don’t see much coming from the collective to try and change that.
Keep an eye on Ben McCollum and Drake if DeVries leaves for Michigan or WVU like anticipated.
Missouri St board seems to be similar to us. I’ve seen names like Steve Alford and Tom Crean being thrown out there.
