I would love to get a 4 and a 5. Domask as a big 3 with size in the front court would be hard to handle.

As much as I'd like to see a lineup with a true "stretch" 4 and a true 5, I think the latter is all we are after. Domask and Harvey will eat up the majority of the minutes at the 3 and 4 spots for the foreseeable future.

SIU desperately needs a couple of 6' 8" or taller kids, that have some athleticism.  IF Mullins & Co. can fill the 4 and 5 spots with those types of kids, Harvey and Domask will be very effective in the 2 and 3 slots...with some spot duty at the 4.

I agree that SIU needs a big or two but I think you’re more likely to see 1 big in a starting lineup in today’s basketball than two, especially in a league like the Valley.  I fully expect them to go hard after bigs in the transfer window or the JUCO route but would be nice to recruit and develop one like Loyola did with Krutwig.

I'd be fine with 1 true big and a quality back-up.  Domask & Harvey are going to be starters.  Both are 6'6".  That's a decent front line.  We have an abundance of guards to play the 1 & 2 spots, especially if Cook returns next year.

I agree, but I would add that I think we don't even need a "true big"; we didn't have one on the 2007 Sweet 16 team, for example. At 6' 7", Falker was not a true big. And Matt Shaw was 6' 6", tops. In a year or two, Domask will be the same size Shaw was, bulk-wise.

Another 6' 7" or 6' 8" guy would do just fine.

I'm not even sure I would put Amaya or Dearman in the "true bigs" category, frankly: Amaya was NOT 6' 8", for one thing, and these days I'm not even sure that would qualify.

At the mid-major level, quality "true bigs" are hard to come by. I can think of three since I started following SIU basketball: Joe C., Kenny Perry (Do NOT tell me he wasn't a quality big), and Kavion Pippen. Yes, ideally, you'd have a quality 6' 10" guy, but you can get by without one in the college game. I would also point out that Drake came to town with a quality "true big" last week, and we sent them packing.

I'm not trying to minimize our deficiencies, mind you, just saying things are not as dire as they seem and recruiting a "true big" is not the panacea that it might seem.

Apologies if that was not your point.

I'd rather have a quality 6'7" guy than a true big that can't move or catch the ball.

You forgot 6' 10" Antonio Harvey....he wasn't bad.  😉   No, I actually agree with you.  When I said a "true big" I wasn't necessarily referring to height.  I'd take another Rolan Roberts in a heartbeat.

Heh--yeah, I did forget about Harvey, but he was only here for his frosh year, so easy to do. 😄

Yes, a rebounding banger like Jones or Roberts would be nice, especially for more than just one year.

I have been one of the "loudest" clamoring for help from "bigs" next year but I didn't necessarily mean 6'10" or taller.  I'd gladly take a STRONG and skilled 6'8" or even 6'7" player as long as they can play D, can REBOUND and are not a wasted touch in the middle.

Amaya was “big” enough to make it to the NBA.

@dawgbytes

If you look at our history, with the exception of Joe C, our " big " men on our best teams were, Corky Abrams, 6'7", Ashraf Amaya 6'6"  Rolan Roberts, 6'5 1/2" maybe 6'6" Randall Falker 6'7" and if you count Jermaine 6'7"......Al Grant on the 77 team was also only 6'7" .....so we can win with the right " big guy", but you still have to have over all better size and strength through out the line up. I have no doubt BMull will get that done.

Does anybody remember When Jerry Jones and Rick Shipley played together.  I sat in section A underneath the basket and watched Ship and Jones pinball any offensive player who dared to come come under the basket.  I believe Ship was 6'8 and Jerry was around 6'6.  I am guessing late 80s.  Neither were true bigs but they got the job done.

I sure do.  Jones was listed at 6'6" but the guy was a beast.  Built like a tank.

I remember seeing him occasionally walking around campus cradling his newborn.  It was quite a contrast!

I think I brought this up before but it bears repeating...………..  I absolutely love that Dalton Banks is following this current team so closely and tweeting about their success!!!  This is the type of recruit that this staff is looking for, not only good players, but players who will be VESTED IN THE SYSTEM !!!
