The thing I like best about Filewich is that he can actually make a basket in the paint; something our big men have had problems doing in the past.

Yeah, I don't think Coupet is coming here to be a rotational guy off the bench. He has a lot to prove, has all the tools, and wants to do it at SIU for his final year. That's more than enough to make me excited. Mix in that what he brings to the team is something that was sorely lacking; the ability to put an opponent on a poster as a guard/wing who's basically the same height as Falker and Shaw from our glory days; the lateral quickness and athleticism to guard wing/forward position players that Trent Brown was trying to guard last year, and as he's mentioned; the ability to get out in transition and fill gaps to the basket while surrounded by shooters, which should equal some exciting plays for a (hopefully) full Banterra Center crowd.
I think our starting lineup will look more like this: Banks/Jones/Coupet/Domask/Filewich if the coaches like Jones at the 2 guard enough to give Dalton the keys and are somewhat comfortable with Brown and D'Amico eating some minutes at the point.
Or: Jones/Coupet/Domask/D'Avanzo/Filewich unless Harvey, Brown, Wonders, or my breakout candidate Verplancken pushes D'Avanzo out of a starting role.
I don't think Brown will start. I see him falling into the role of a 15-20 minutes a game bench player, for which he's properly suited given his current production. I think on this deep team, he'll also quickly realize that to get even that many minutes consistently, he'll have to effectively back up the point guard position.
I also don't think Muila will start. Filewich will probably keep the job, at least early in the season, but if Muila is healthy, he could push for it, and don't be surprised to see Ebube get plenty of run; that kid is huge, very athletic, and has a higher ceiling than Filewich or Muila, IMO.
As others have stated, this team is deep and can run multiple effective lineup combos. I can't wait for this season to start!

I was at a songwriters festival a few years ago. Singer named James McMurtry was tuning his guitar, preparing to sing. It was a small venue, quite a few people shouting out song suggestions. After 4 or 5 minutes of this he says "a lot of you know what you want to hear, I know what you're going to hear".
End of story.

"Ben is a winner," Mullins said. "I love what he is about. He has helped his teams win championships at every level in his career. He wants to be a part of something special in his last year, and I couldn't be more excited to have him join the program. He is a versatile guard that can score at all three levels and guard multiple positions. He will be able to make an immediate impact for us on both sides of the ball. He will fit in great with the culture we have been building and want to continue to establish this upcoming year."

It’s criminal that more people don’t know about James McMurtry. One of the greatest American songwriters in some time.
The biggest take away that I get from this is he can start right away due to his DEFENSIVE ability. That being said, he is no slouch on the offensive end. He can slash, distribute and even shoot the 3. His versatility and defense will make it an easy transition for him to the MVC.
I also like that he said himself that he would like to be a "spokesmen" to get other city players to come to SIU in the future.
Go Dawgs !!!
Here is my opinion
it is so much fun to truly care again I don’t care who starts

His Dad's not bad either. "Lonesome Dove", "The Last Picture Show", etc.
We are pretty sure one more scholarship is going to open. No clue who but I am guessing we all have the same guess
I think they HAVE to take Jones off the point. He had more turnovers than assists and you can't have that from your PG. He also only every goes to the hole on his right which makes it easy to defend and/or take the charge. He got an awful lot of charging fouls last year. I think the best team basketball we sall all year after Domask went out was when Jones got hurt in the play in game at the Arch Madness
That said, I hope and I don't see this happening, that they would employ a pressing/trapping defense and rotate players a lot
I'd have Domask or Coupet play PG and Jones play the 2. Domask or Coupet at the 3, D'Avanzo/D'Amico at the 4. Ebube/Filewich/Muila at the 5
That gives you Banks/Brown to rotate in at PG, Verplancken/Wonders/Harvey at the 2. And as others have said you have a lot of flexibilty here. I think you have 3 very good shot blockers here as a last line of defense if the press is broken
Just my thoughts, I know the idea of Domask/Coupet bringing the ball up is radical, I am thinking back to Corky Abrams on the 77 team

Domask starting at PG?????? I doubt very much that you will see that happen. You have plenty of flexibility without seeing MD starting at PG.

I think the coaches are definitely interested in moving Jones to the 2. The fact that we were recruiting a veteran PG was telling. However, I think Banks is going to be a very good PG for us. He certainly showed flashes of greatness last year. If he can get more consistent he can be special. I think he is our PG of the future and wouldn't be surprised if he starts at PG, maybe even from the beginning of the season. My way too early to tell starting lineup for next year is:
Banks, Jones, Coupet Jr, Domask & Muila.
I think that the above is a stonger, more athletic, and defensively better lineup than any we had at any time last year. Of course, injuries will play a big part in where it ends up and I expect at least 10 or 11 players to get get minutes to start. The interesting part will be which 2 or 3 players besides Dembele aren't in the rotation. We are going to have some talented players not in the rotation. Like I said before, good problem to have and practices will be epic!!!

It is certainly different when you actually care, and might actually be able to attend a game again.
I was thinking that with this Team depth Mullins might bring back Floor-Burn-U , and have everyone take short shifts in the first half playing smothering defense and completely exhaust the other team by half time.
Bring Back That Home Court Winning Streak that I so enjoyed.
It's always fun to speculate on who plays who starts who finishes games but until Coach Mullins and his staff have full roster of their players and the system they want play I just enjoy the speculation and joy for the upcoming season but I choose to let things play out because we don't know about injuries and wellness of players Summer workouts and any red shirt possibilities but it is fun to be excited for the upcoming season
