@bleedfknmaroon25 I think Mullins may held Howard’s recruiting back Mullins def chose high character over talent on occasion. I love great kids but sometimes talent is more important
I’d argue the previous coach didn’t do enough to push NIL to alumni. How many of us received phone calls and emails to donate to the Floorburn U collective? I first heard about it on this site and I’ve donated to the university several times before. Maybe he pushed the administration and they didn’t do enough, but advertisement for the Floorburn U collective has been abysmal. I’ll be sure to donate when Barkeep and 69 get the link up!
I don't think you can put that on just the coach. For me, that is squarely on the administration with coaches in a supporting role. I wish Mullins would have done something similar to what Hill does with the Gridiron club, but the admin HAS to be pushing this and to a lesser extent with those running the collective (most of which are donating their time...so not sure how much I can blame them).

We have it on the front page of the site.
Our new coach just landed at the airport in Carbondale-Murphy-Desoto.
That should be referred to as the "Carbondale Metroplex". 😆
My guess is one of two things on the Howard front:
1) Howard didn't see eye to eye on player recruitment with Mullins and the type / talent to bring in. Administration sides with Howard
2) Lots to buy out in his employment contract / stipulations that keep him on board (not totally sure how that works with Assistants, though tbf)
you don’t know what he did or didn’t do. It’s not all on the each individual coach. They have enough on their plate. That’s why you have an athletic department, check out what other schools are doing. Do they have an individual or a couple of individuals to handle this. St Louis supposedly has 2.5 million for their NIL money. When that runs out. There will be 2.5 million to replace it. It’s a whole new worlds out there. Get on the train or be left in the station. If the administration wants wins and post season. Then make sure we have the pieces in place.

Yes, we would like talent but also have a character. We don’t want to be back into the CLO era his last few years. Police blotter and mediocre grades where we were almost on academic probation from the NCAA

Theres a happy medium between APR Hell and taking guys based on high-academics. I assure you the Bruce Weber teams didn’t have all 4.0 GPA’s
And Rolen Roberts would never have been a Saluki if we didn’t take on some risk
Press conference today. Some questions I hope he’s asked (though he may not have answers yet on all of them):
- What drew you to the SIU job?
- Who from Wright State coaching staff is joining?
- Is Jerrance Howard staying?
- Is it harder to convince Wright State players/recruits to follow with an internal hire made there?
- What is your mindset about the current Saluki roster/with most of team in the portal?
- The gap between Raiders’ offensive and defensive metrics was wide last year: how can that be addressed and what are your thoughts on the importance of playing good defense?
- As a veteran coach, what has it been like acclimating to the portal and is it overwhelming having so many spots to fill for next year’s team in the coming weeks?
- When is it realistic to have your full coaching staff assembled?
- How are you planning to sell SIU from a recruiting standpoint?
- In making the coaching change, Tim Leonard set some high expectations for the program. What is reasonable to expect from you in terms of MVC and postseason performance over the next several seasons?
Edit: Also would like to see Leonard asked about SIU’s NIL competitiveness.
I hope it’s a long press conference. 😆
Good questions. The NIL related questions are important and would like to hear his responses.
Another question should be:
- Is your wife and kids making the move to Carbondale with you?
Go Dawgs!
Deleting my NIL question... will come back to it later...
