I’m not worried about Nagy building a staff really.  He’s been a coach forever and probably has a ton of connections to build a quality staff.  I worry about not taking any players though.

do you think it could be a non answer so that he doesn’t say it before it happens ?

Yes.  There's no way he's not in communication with his top players from this year's team.

And if he's not, then we hired the wrong man for the job.

Interested to see the first version of the Scott Nagy Salukis.  At the very least, SIU basketball will be exciting to watch again.  I could not have taken a 6th season of whatever BM was trying to do.

Yep.  I was actually not going to buy my season tickets for next season.  Now I guess I'm going to have to 🙂

@salukiworld I think we all knew that’s a possibility it’s never a given that they will come. Plenty of other players out there

Wright State promoting internally, and so quickly, was not helpful for Southern.

@siudawgs it’s always a possibility they stay. We knew next year would probably be a building year anyway. Hit the portal bring back some of our guys and it will be fine

The Wright State board is making fun of us for wanting to take most of their roster since they didn't think they were very good last year.  I would have gladly taken Noel and all of their commits for next year.  They don't realize we have 2 guys on our current roster and neither played much last year.  And we have no idea if they're back.

honestly just gotta wait and see what we can do about next year. Upgraded Coach was the first challenge let’s see what he can do. Remember we got domask in may. So lotta good players still out there. And f their board lol

Their latest post referenced that a large portion of our fanbase is unhappy with the hire. Haha. There was over 200 fans that took time out of their day to come to campus at 1 pm to cheer him on, and there's been very little negativity I've come across so far. Somehow they have the impression that he's too similar to Mullins, when in reality he's the complete opposite in style. I wish Wright State well. All mid majors and low majors should cheer for their success, but we are happy with what he have and Nagy is already embraced here. This region loves themselves some basketball.

Also, Domask was not a Mullins find. He basically came directly from Pat Monaghan who Mullins hired as an assistant. Anthony Beane came with Anthony Senior etc. We may backdoor our way into a commit by way of assistant coaches being hired. Lots of different ways to build out a roster.

I think a lot of people are totally on board with this hire and the ones that are holding out will be on board when the games start and they're more watchable than they've been.

Only concerns I have is Nagy's ability to work the portal and relating to current college kids as he continues to get older.

Then there are people that are not going to buy season tickets next year because of Mullins being let go. It’s a big world out there. So we will have to realise that SIU will gain some and lose some.  Let’s see how the final results are in with the total number next year on season tickets.

@kiwiball okay so would you rather have had brown or a 6’6 wing who can score and defend consistently but is a 3.0 student because 3.0 students are a lot more common than kids like brown our talent pool opens up

iDK what Mullins recruiting philosophy was. There many factors that go into it. In no particular order. Character, talent, home life, future relationships (younger brother talent) future relationships with players in area. Grades. Asst. coaches that have inroads with AAU coaches. Lots of variables.  Maybe that 6’6” 3.0 gpa is on our radar. Except so is Missouri, Creighton, Iowa. In the early 70’s Coach Lambert was from Hardin Simmons college. One of his assistants was from the south. His connections (long before AAU) high school coaches brought us Mike Glenn, ( recruited heavily by Dean Smith at UNC) Corky Abrams(packaged deal) with Glenn. Richard Ford, Jac Cliatt, Joe C Meriweather, Wayne Abrams, Gary Wilson. Recruiting is like courting your future wife.  You build a relationship with the person and the parties involved. With the portal and NIL MONEY today being a huge factor in recruiting. It will make the recruiting experience even harder.
So yes a 6’6” wing wins 3.0 gpa is lots better than a 6’ 3” guy but there are more suiters for the 6’6” guys, which it makes it more difficult for the SIU’s of the world to recruit.

@kiwiball

My time at Southern was when the players you mentioned were brought in along with Tim Ricci from West Frankfort. He then picked up Dennis Shidler from Vincennes JC and the program greatly improved. The lack of integration in many southern school certainly was a factor in their coming to SIU along with the assistant you mentioned. Glenn, Abrams, and Meriwether as well as Ricci were also good students with high character. I remember a person I knew who often traveled with the team remarking how different it was with those players bringing textbooks on the road with them and spending much time in their room studying.

i am still hopeful Coach Nagy can convince some of the portal players to stay. Even though we lost X along with Brown and probably D’Amico, the cupboard was not bare with those returning.

Mike Glenn was an outstanding student along with others mentioned. Glenn I believe was close to a 4.0 student.  All of high character too
