This is a very good hire AS an assistant coach. This staff is literally the polar opposite of the Mullins staff. A highly successful experienced head coach and a very experienced former head coach as an assistant. I am guessing Hawkins may be the defensive X's and O's guy. Veasley is the head recruiter right now and he is a good recruiter. We do however need to hire another recruiting specialist as our last assistant. If Mullins had someone like Hawkins on staff and if he was willing to listen to him he may still be coaching at SIU.

This may be on the wrong thread but people need to slow the panic. 90 percent of those in the portal still remain. It’s a long painful process. Patience , patience, patience. Nagy knows what he is doing.

My rebuttal to that is…does he? The man can coach and the man has shown he can win and recruit in the non-portal era.  But he hasn’t proven himself in the portal era.  This isn’t me putting Coach Nagy down, this is me being leery until I see something….which is hopefully sooner rather than later.

Only 1 player on this years Wright St roster came via the portal….and he started his career with Wright St before leaving and then returning.  I just don’t know if a total rebuild can happen the traditional route anymore.

@johnny-utah Unfortunately, for us old timers, the traditional route is a thing of the past. It's portal or bust sprinkled with a few prep players.

@johnny-utah Thing is you don’t have any better idea than I do what todays true environment is like, but it is naive to think he doesn’t. He has years of experience, we have none. Patience. Time will tell , one way or the other.

Let’s not go the whole naive route,  if we are comparing ourselves to D1 coaches we all need zip it.  It has nothing to do with what you are I think, it has to do with how he compares to his peers.  I’m somewhat skeptical due to his last couple of seasons during the portal era. Not saying he’s going to be terrible and not know what he is doing.  I just worry that the best part of his game is what we are needing right now. There are a lot of good basketball coaches out of the game right now due to the portal era.  I just want to see results before saying “ look at prior results.”

@dunkledog It’s been a long time. But arguably the best staff ever at SIU was Weber, Painter, Lowery, Watson.

I know Nagy has commented regarding his preference for building a team around high school players, but he has recently acknowledged his understanding of the portals importance.  Let's also not forget that just last year he signed a player from Ohio St (who formerly played for him at Wright St which says a lot to me).   What says more is that he retained an all conference player in Trey Calvin for his graduate season.  I have no idea what to think of the staff he has hired overall, let alone their ability to navigate the portal, but I also don't think he thinks he can, or plans on, reviving this program on HS athletes alone.  I think, especially this offseason, we will see a good number of portal players.  Let's just hope they're good ones !!!

I like it. Gotta think Mamon staying on could really help our chances with Ebube, Ferguson, and maybe even some others.

Maybe there’s a thread of hope for Kennard if Mamon is staying
