I still believe that Bryan and Company may be waiting to see if Verplancken will be able to play immediately before they fill the final two scholarships.  The NCAA Council vote on May 20, 2020 (or lack there of) will set a lot of different scenarios in play for this roster.

I am sure available playing minutes will be a factor in what type of player they bring in with these two final scholarships.

The coaching staff is not twiddling its thumbs for weeks waiting on further clarity on Verplancken. If there are kids they’re trying to sign, and I’m sure there are, why would they put themselves at a disadvantage like that?

I never said the coaching staff were twiddling their thumbs for weeks.  From most recent reports, the NCAA Council vote will probably occur in 12 days.   I am sure the coaching staff is staying in contact with their priority recruits.  I am also sure they have already signed the players that they have targeted for each position.  With 11 scholarship players currently on this roster, playing time will be an issue for any additional recruits that may transfer in.  If you estimate and add up the number of minutes each currently signed player will play next season, there are not many minutes left.

If Verplancken is eligible to play immediately, he will probably play at least 10-15mpg which would not leave many minutes for a transfer looking to come to a program for playing time.  In this scenario, I am sure the coaching staff will be looking to add role players to address specific needs they see this team might need help with.  I am sure they will be looking at transfer players that want to play for a winning program and are not concerned with major playing minutes.  If the transfer rule does not change, they would possibly bring in a transfer or two that will have to sit a year.  That will keep their scout team competitive for this season and also allow the transfer player to get used to the system.

Honestly, with these last two scholarships, the coaching staff cannot answer questions a transfer recruit might have about playing time without knowing where the transfer rule is headed.   Granted, Verplancken signed on knowing he would have to sit for a year.  It might be a case were Verplancken will red shirt regardless of the rule and the coaching staff would bring in an experienced grad-transfer point/combo guard that will get plenty of minutes.

The above is just my opinion and observation.

First off, as I wrote in another thread recently, SIU's projected bench for next year is extremely young/unproven (all freshmen and sophomores), so I'm not sure I agree with your premise that there wouldn't be substantial minutes available if they were still able to snag a solid JUCO or grad transfer. In particular, they could still use another scorer to improve depth.

Second, last I saw a week or two ago, it sounded like the immediate transfer eligibility policy was very unlikely to happen, so unless I'm missing something I assume Verplancken will have to sit out next year.

In any event, if the coaches can get a commitment from a talented player they're interested in, they aren't going to wait a minute longer than necessary to get him inked ... that's just the nature of recruiting. And I would hope/think that with two scholarships still open, there will be some activity sooner than later to fill at least one of those slots.

I agree with this.  As excited as we are about the guys that we have signed, that doesn't mean that every one of them will be successful.  The guys that produce will see playing time.  And if we find the right guy, we will make room for him.  Bryan will play the best players, no matter what order they sign in.

If a player gets an academic scholarship does that go against the team's 13 scholarships( for basketball)?

All this talk about signing "role players" rubs me the wrong way.  Why the hell wouldn't they sign the best possible available player they can get?

I am sure they are.
getting somebody better than Jones,Domask or Harvey at this point seems like a long long shot though

I think you go after the best you can get that fills specific needs and fits your program. I'd wager that is more or less how Bryan and company are going about it. Roles will be defined once everyone's on campus and practice begins.

Bryan basically said on the news last night that he is going after the best possible player, regardless of position.

I just hate the term "role player."  It's not a very flattering term, in my opinion.

Well, I look at the grid and see a solid frontcourt and a solid backcourt. Don't see a bunch of holes to fill. I always let the coaches decide who starts and who sits and who redshirts because they know so much more than I do. What I would do in this situation is go get the two best basketball players, that fit the culture, that i could find regardless of class, size, position etc.

I agree with this guy from a couple weeks ago.

i absolutely want a role player. someone who fills the roll of all conference center. about 6-11, 260. shot blocker, rebounder, beast. what do you have against that kind of role player? 😂
