Very interesting article here from the Sun-Times on some of the ups and downs over the years for Coupet, who had a lot of hype coming into Simeon but has been humbled along the way.

“I want to show that SIU is a place in-state kids can go to and have success, especially from the Chicago Public League,” said Coupet. “That’s a goal of mine. I’m hoping to make something truly special in this final year.”

I like this guy. I wish him a lot of success here in Carbondale!

He's got the tools. With his experience and age he could be a big part of SIU taking the next step this year. Also, he may be able to be somewhat of a mentor to D'Amico. I believe they are somewhat similar players. If Coupet is a big contributor this year, D'Amico could possibly step into the same role the following year. I would love to sit in on a couple practices this year. It is going to be crazy competitive!!!!!!
I continue to be amazed at those who dismiss Filewich or Brown as potential starters this coming season. Now, I have no idea who will be in the starting lineup other than Domask, and most likely Jones....but Filiewich had the best Fr. year of any big man at SIU in years, maybe in history. Clearly Mullins likes Browns on the ball defense and his improvement in his shooting this year was significant. Clearly both have certain limitations but their strengths outweigh their weaknesses. Certainly Muila could start and Brown could be on the bench but don't be surprised if both Brown and Filewich start the year in the top 5..... dismiss them at your own peril. All that said, it really doesn't matter who starts, its about minutes and who finishes.....gonna be a fun year with all the options Coach has in front of him.

Generally agree with much of this, but as I posted in another thread a few weeks ago, even with his "significant" shooting improvement, Brown's offensive production (scoring and assists) for playing 30-plus minutes a game was not good, and he does not get rebounds, either. I know the coaching staff likes him a lot, but his defense has to be really, really, really good to justify big minutes with improved depth and options around him (or he has to take another big step forward on offense). My 2 cents.

Agreed. After 2 years I do not think there is any reason to pretend Brown should be anything more than a rotational player off the bench worth 5-10 minutes a game for a team hopeful of competing for championships. I don't mean that to be mean, but it may be generous considering how I feel most times watching him play.
I’d be pretty surprised if Coupet is coming to SIU to come off the bench especially with him saying he had better offers elsewhere.
If I had to guess, you’ll see a:
Jones/Brown/Coupet/Domask/D’Avanzo
with Harvey, Banks, Wonders, Verplancken, Muila, Filewich, Ebube, D’Amico getting minutes off the bench. Lot of minutes to go around but you’re not going to have to overuse Domask anymore
Or maybe they put Filewich in there with D’Avanzo if they like that pairing which puts Brown on the bench.
I’m lower on Muila than most because of his injuries but I think you’ll get his production in spurts off the bench.
I know we’re in a different world with college but I wonder if redshirt is possible for D’Amico

I don't see D'Avanzo starting at the 5, and I hope that's not the case (especially from a defense and rebounding standpoint), but we shall see.
@siudawgs I agree that I don't think D'Avanzo starts, but I don't see anyone redshirting unless an injury occurs. I believe D'Amico and Wonders and Ebube will get significant minutes by the time we start conference play.

I think given D’Avanzo’s age and the fact he came back, he’ll be a starter. I don’t know if starting matters though because I think there will be a nice minutes split among the bigs and wouldn’t be surprised if Filewich gets more minutes than him even off the bench

I have to side with @dogdays with this a little bit. The thing is...Brown had a hot start last year and his production really dropped off when Marcus went down. Assuming all of our weapons are back, we don't really need Brown to be the guy who gets drives and assists. We need a guy who can flat out knock down 3's and play great defense on the other end. Brown has the best chance at that role. I also think that there's a good chance he starts at the 2 position.

No way D'Avanzo starts at the 5 over Filewich or Muila. There is a chance D'Avanzo starts at the 4, but I think we will go with 3 guards and Domask starting at the 4. With Coupet playing a wing. Our biggest weakness last year was rebounding and interior defense. Both of these are Muila's strengths. We need to get more athletic and Muila and Coupet Jr. provide that, so I expect both of them to play quite a bit. This is not to diminish Filewich. I like him very much and expect him to also play significant minutes. However, Filewich has a long way to go regarding his interior defense and rebounding, so he will need to significantly improve in those areas to get more playing time than Muila. Filewich will get plenty of time when we need interior scoring and when the matchup's are right.

I don't normally disagree with too much you have to say, but this is one of those times. I said it a week or two back and I'll say it again, (if healthy) JD Muila will be a starter (at least by year end) and very possibly could be the most important player on this year's team. Filewich had a lot of success last year, but JD is coming in with 2 years experience on one of the top JUCO teams in the country and was rated in the TOP 25 of all JUCO players before coming to SIU. I think he matches up much better against some of the dominant big men in the Valley.
I am very confident that D'Avanzo will not be starting at the 5. Here's my way too early starting 5 now that the roster is set, barring any unforseen changes.
Jones *
Brown/Wonders/Verplancken
Domask *
Coupet
Muila *
The versatility in this year's team will be ridiculous. You have multiple players who can play basically any position, except the 5. I think Muila and Filewich will basically get equal minutes this year.
Another thing to think about is how much better will practices be now that you have MORE than 5 capable starters on the team.
While I had hoped to land a PG that really focused on distributing the ball without having too many turnovers, I still think this team has a chance to surprise a lot of people this year. I do plan on taking them in the last round of my College Hoops Draft this year !!!

Agreed, D'Avanzo is a better fit at the 4 than the 5, especially with a tantalizing combined 15 fouls to divide up at the 5 this year between Muila, Filewich and Ebube.
