Sure hope this move by the new coach wasn't mainly motivated by a concern for job security. When asked what attracted him to this job, there were a couple of things he said that I found a bit concerning. He mentioned he liked working with the athletic director at WSU and that he was retiring. He mentioned what a difficult decision it was and that his situation there was in flex.
First thing I thought was he might have been concerned about getting the axe there after a couple of mediocre years and that's probably why he wanted an unusually long deal at SIU - I think 6 years is unusual for a new coach.
His record has been fairly impressive, but the fact that I also didn't see what I would call a fiery personality had me remembering Dale Lennon. Hope Nagy proves me all wet.
5 or 6 is pretty standard, Bryan was given 5 and an extra year after Kill left. So he basically had the same deal.Sure hope this move by the new coach wasn't mainly motivated by a concern for job security. @johnny-utah Now you're just being stupid. I HAVE seen him play with my own two eyes and so have the two other posters who just backed me up. He may be a great kid for all I know. But if he couldn't get one minute of playing time this season after burning his redshirt, that tells you how much Mullins valued him as a player. I hope he proves us all wrong and turns into something. But he obviously needs a lot of work.
Now you are changing your story. If you would have said that from the get go no harm done. But your idiotic statement of something like “rec leaguers say he’s bad, so I don’t want him back. In this argument there was one stupid statement, and it came from you. If you feel he’s bad ok, fine, But don’t bring in what a rec center player says. I haven’t seen enough of him to tell you if he’s good or bad….but the more you talk I’m not taking your word on it.
IDK your sources but someone told me he looked pretty good in the church league game last week.
@johnny-utah You don't find people who actually play ball with and against him "credible?"
No not at all. There wouldn’t be an ounce of biased reporting going on right? The man look at this kid, I’m better than him crowd. He got offers to 7 different D-1 schools, I think I’d take that as being more credible than the scouting eyes of the rec center.
On a side note back in the day I played there against Carlton Fay and playing against him it was in those same kind of terms….how is this guy playing for the Salukis. Maybe they don’t give it their all in rec center games and the others are playing in their “Super Bowl” against a D1 recruit.
But no Rec leaguer in my eyes is not a credible source.
Believe what you want. I liked the Sharp signing at the time. But after seeing him in practice, I wasn't too impressed. Keep in mind he sat the bench all year (behind Trey Miller) and maybe temper your expectations. Mullins was desperate for a back-up PG when he signed him.
The kids at The Rec also played against Clarence and Troy and said they were really good. Chris Cross and Sterling Sharp? Not so much. Sorry.
to be fair I don’t put much into Mullins ability to judge offensive players considering how he uses bigs and left Trent brown start all 4 years. Even though he only really had one great year. So you never know if he is actually good

I don’t know if he’s good,,,,I’m not going to base my opinion on who saw him play at the rec center. Not a credible source in my opinion….that’s on you if you are citing that as why you don’t won’t him back.
Article from the Dayton paper:
@siudawgs Thanks for sharing. It has to be a good sign for us that Coach heard/felt the Lord calling him to SIU.
I wouldn’t worry too much about a lack of “fiery” personality. If you asked anyone from Brookings who used to watch him, nobody would say he lacked the ability to be intense! I think he toned it down a bit at Wright State, I remember coming across this article a few years ago that might explain why. He always seemed calm and measured during postgame interviews so I can see why he might come across as more laid back, but I gotta believe he still has the ability to get after it during games. https://www.daytondailynews.com/sports/archdeacon-the-stark-wake-up-call-that-forever-changed-wright-states-scott-nagy/E572AZ6TZVHVROXJECVHOEX2FM/
Article from the Dayton paper:
He mentions the AD's retirement as a reason for his decision, although it seemed like more of a fear of the unknown than anything. It's kind of funny because Bob Grant, the outgoing AD Nagy has high praise for, and Billy Donlon, the coach who preceded Nagy, did not get along (Donlon did not make the NCAAs in six years as coach). Nagy also mentioned that before he took over, Wright State did not recruit much in Ohio; Donlon recruited mostly out of state despite a deep in-state talent pool. Things worked out nicely for Donlon, though -- he's now Clemson's associate head coach.

First of all, I don't appreciate being called an idiot. I'm not changing my story at all. You totally ignored the fact that myself and others have seen him play and focused on what The Rec players said. You don't seem to think they're credible, so I didn't mention them this time.
I'm not sure what your basis is for thinking players at The Rec are not credible sources. Do you know any of them? I do. Some of them have college basketball experience. Some are even coaches at the high school level. I absolutely trust their judgment (in addition to what I've seen with my own eyes). The guys I've talked to do not have an axe to grind, as you suggested. They are all SIU fans.
So honestly, you have no idea WTF you're talking about. Your opinion is all speculation based on nothing. Sure, we'd all like for him to be a good player. But the SIU coaches didn't think he was good enough to even play him in mop up time. So, yeah color me skeptical. Again, I hope he works hard to get better and proves us all wrong (including the guys at the Rec).
Jerrance is staying. It's part of the deal.
I think they can keep Sharp with Howard staying. I’m very excited about Sharp despite the lack of playing this season.
I'm not. The kids that play against him at The Rec say he's terrible.
Just so we are clear this is what you said….the “kids”. Now you are saying high school coaches are saying this. You stated to me “ don’t be stupid”…..it struck a nerve when this was your quote saying he’s terrible because kids at the Rec say he is. Now you are saying it is high school coaches and other people. I haven’t seen enough of him to know if he is good or not….him not playing is not enough evidence, that’s just assuming. If you say you know bc you saw him in practice and warmups, you know he’s not good, ok that’s your opinion.
And just letting you know I am a former head high school coach and AD and current assistant coach. Some know more than others so just bc one says they saw him play in pickup games doesn’t mean it’s the gospel. But it is their opinion.
I don’t know if he’s good or bad but just look at the quote attached and tell me what one should think of it.
But yeah it hit a nerve telling me to not be stupid….when this is the entire quote I was reacting to. You can now add more credibility to who said it, when in fact this is what you said in your entirety.
I watched Sharp play in the Indiana State tournament semifinals and finals as a senior. He did not score much in the final, maybe only a point or two, but he ran the offense for a big win with a bunch of assists. My concern was inconsistent scoring and his size. I thought he could play and contribute for the Salukis this year.
@johnny-utah No problem. I have also coached at the HS and AAU level. And one of the "kids" who played against Sterling and gave his assessment is a current HS coach. Had I known my simple but true statement was going to be so dissected, I would've given you more information.
My feeling is you are just defending the kid out of some sense of blind faith or loyalty or whatever. That's fine. If you don't consider any of: 1) players who've played against him 2) people who've observed him in practice, or 3) his own college coaches who burned his redshirt then sat him at the end of the bench the entire remainder of the season to be "credible sources" then I don't know what else it could be.

I’ll stand by my own statement….if the kid is “terrible” he tricked 7 D1 coaches who making a living doing what they do, into offering him a scholarship. If the kids at the Rec think he’s bad then hats fine…..I will side with the D1 coaches that think he is ok.
@johnny-utah Great. I hope he proves you right someday. So far, he hasn't shown us much. I don't know who those 6 other D1 coaches are, but I doubt they're kicking themselves right now.
