6’4 Freshman from the Dominican Republic
Big guard. Reminds me of Francois?
I usually am supportive of the coaching staff and what they are doing trying to build a culture and a roster to bring SIU back to prominence but this seems like a big jump for the young man from division 3 to division 1

Glenville is actually D2. And any kid that can average 16 pts a gm as a freshman at any level probably has some game....occasionally kids slip through the cracks and he may just be one of them.
The kid can clearly shoot and has good ball-handling skills.
If you wanna know his backstory, I found this: http://www.gilmerfreepress.net/index.php/site/verplanckens_journey_to_glenville_state/
I was a doubter at first, too. That lasted about two minutes. Just go to to his Twitter feed and see what everybody has to say about him, especially coaches. Look at his Freshman stats. Shot 45% from 3-point range. If I'm not mistaken, the basket is 10 feet from the ground and the 3-point line is the same in D2 as it is at Banterra Center. Three years of eligibility. This kid is a player.
MVC Hoops just re-tweeted a post from Braden Burke, 7'0" back-up Center for Michigan State. He's a Grad Transfer and just entered the portal. Seems to really want a chance to prove himself. MVC Hoops is encouraging SIU, ISU, & Drake to take a chance on him for a year and see what he can do in the MVC. There must be something to it, because both Bryan & Brendan Mullins are now following him on Twitter. He could be next year's "Barrett Benson."

Is this imminent commitment some sort of cruel belated April fools joke or something ???

Nope it’s real. Don’t rush the kid. Although he could hurry up

If he doesn't hurry, I'm going to spill it. Here's a clue....he's not Canadian! 🤣
I’ve heard we will be getting 6’5 Guard AJ Staton-McCray! He’s an athletic guard that brings toughness to the floor. Can score in multiple ways and he also defends and rebounds. McCray was named to the SIAA 1st team and Academic team. Offers from Illinois St, Buffalo and DePaul and others! Hope it’s true! Definitely could start next year along side Jones and Harvey!
Is this the kid he played in Florida?
It’s Easter, give the athlete a break...
If we get Staton-McCray, that is a pretty good get. Kid has 9 offers according to Rivals, including DePaul and Illinois State. I would be pleasantly surprised if it's him.
